Robert Combas, born in 1957 in Lyon, is a major French artist of the contemporary scene. He is considered the founder of the Free Figuration movement in the early 1980s.
His unique style is characterized by explosive, colorful and narrative painting, mixing references to popular culture, art history and current events. His works are recognizable by their expressive characters and dense compositions.
Combas draws his inspiration from various sources: rock music, comics, art brut, graffiti, but also classical art and history. He creates a personal universe rich in symbols and narratives.
His pictorial technique is spontaneous and energetic, using mainly acrylic that he applies directly to the canvas. His works are often accompanied by texts that are an integral part of the composition.
Over the years, he has developed different thematic series, addressing subjects as varied as mythology, war, love, music and politics, always with his characteristic style.
